Origin of Lean Six Sigma

The concepts behind both Lean and Six Sigma originated in Japan in the 1950s’.

Lean originated from the system known as Toyota Production System (TPS) developed by Taiichi Ohno. Toyota realised that there were many areas where they could reduce waste and increase efficiency, using simple changes to their processes. This system later came to be known as Lean. Because it focused on eliminating waste by streamlining processes, making them leaner, while still meeting customer expectations. Many companies adopted it as an effective way to reduce cost while improving their performance and impacting bottomline.

Motorola developed Six Sigma in the 1980s as a way to measure the performance of their manufacturing processes. It involved 2 steps. First – analysing data from measurements taken during production processes to identify variation and errors. Second – making improvements based on those results. The goal was to decrease defects by improving process stability through better control systems design and analysis techniques such as statistical process control (SPC).

Where Is Lean Six Sigma Used? 

Several large organizations such as Microsoft, Apple, Procter & Gamble, General Electric, UPS, Motorola Solutions, and many others have adopted Lean Six Sigma. Any type of organisation, from manufacturing plants to banks and healthcare facilities, can adopt and use Lean Six Sigma. It was originally designed for use in large corporations. However, small businesses are also beginning to benefit from the cost savings and improved efficiency resulting from implementing LSS practices.
